Fanchion Janet Smith, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family in Jackson, Michigan. She was born on September 1, 1936, in Jackson, Michigan, and lived a life full of love, laughter, and service to others. Fanchion, devoted her life to her family and community. She worked as a secretary at the Jackson County Medical Care Facility for 40 years and was known for her warmth and dedication to the staff and the patients. An avid gardener and skilled cook, Fanchion's home was always filled with the fragrance of fresh flowers and delicious meals. She was also an honored member of Berean Bible Baptist Church, where she found great joy in her faith. Fanchion is survived by her husband of 29 years, Lenroy Smith; her brother Darrow Dungy, her sister Toni Dungy, her children, Mary (Sam) Jones, Marty Adams; six cherished grandchildren, five great grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, and her dear friend June Stafford who remained by her side every day until her final moments.
She was preceded in death by her brother Alvie Dungy Jr., sister Mildred Owens, sister Oveda Parker, brother Kenneth Dungy, and sister Darlene Hughes. Fanchion will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her infectious laugh, and her unwavering love for her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and treasured memories. Visitation for Fanchion will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 5:00-7:00 PM at Burden Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, 1806 East Michigan Avenue, Jackson, Michigan. Fanchion’s Home Going will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 23, 2025, with a family hour at 11:00 AM followed by the service at 12:00 PM.
