Of Jackson, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on May 13, 2026, at the age of 82. Born September 18, 1943, in Langley, Kentucky, Virgil was the son of William and Julia Mays.
On October 23, 1971, Virgil married Linda Mays, and together they shared 54 years of marriage. Throughout his life, Virgil carried himself with a steady kindness and a quiet, selfless devotion to others—most evident in the way he cherished time with his family and in how readily he offered a helping hand to anyone in need.
Virgil served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged due to an injury and very proud of the time he served. He worked for Chelsea Industries for 20 years, first as a machinist and later as a supervisor. Away from work, he found simple, lasting enjoyment in fishing and in working on cars—pursuits that reflected his practical nature and the satisfaction he took in doing things well.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Linda; his children, Cindy Childs, Angie Thomas, Julie (Shawn) McGarry, Joe (Sara) Mays, and Chris Mays; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Oscar, Oliver, Junior, Joe, Robert, Jesse, Thurmal, and Shirley; and his grandson, Zachary.
