She is preceded in death by her parents, Karl William Bredenberg and Irene Julia Vodica Bredenberg of Jacksonville. She is survived by her two children, Tim Peeler (Susie) of Jacksonville Florida and Lisa Peeler Boening (Butch) of Troutman North Carolina. She has 4 living grandchildren whom she adored: Lindsey Boening Cato, Brittany Peeler, Emily Boening, and Jack Peeler; and one great grandchild, Claire.
Brita attended Fairlawn High School. She went on to attend earn degrees from Duke University and Duke School of Nursing, then transferred to Columbia University 1966. She later earned a Master of Education & a Master of Health Sciences from UNF in Jacksonville Florida (1975)
After advancing through her nursing career, she continued in the medical industry in various capacities. Amongst her many professional accomplishments, she held 3 international fellowships: Fellow for Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (United Kingdom), Fellow for International Council for Alcohol and Addiction (Lausanne Switzerland), and Official Liaison for Danish Ministry of Education (Copenhagen Denmark). Brita held many leadership positions including Director of Nursing in Houston TX, Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville FL, and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Fl. She was also Director of Regional Emergency Medical Services in Dallas TX, Gainesville FL, and Tallahassee FL.
Brita had an early influence on emergency medical services in its early years and on the World Health Organization.
In her later career, Brita continued in nursing and hospice care. She was an entrepreneur who loved to do freelance writing of many medical and nursing journals, owned her own consignment shop, participated in preservation and historical societies. She loved to attend fine arts including regular attendance at the symphony and shows at the Alhambra Dinner Theatre.
Brita loved and was loved by her family dearly. She was fortunate to have many close friends during her life. She treasured their companionship. There is not anything that she would not do for her family and friends.
Brita led a rich life and thrived on experiences including traveling the world, including Antarctica. She had a love for animals and our environment.
Private family services will be held in the spring. Donations may be made in her name to the Humane Society.
