James Guilford “Guil” Ray, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025. He was surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 11, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, Guil was a vibrant soul whose passion for life, generosity and smile left indelible marks on all who knew him.
A true adventurer at heart, Guil found joy in the open waters, whether boating along the coast of Jacksonville, exploring the serene shores and seas of Maine, or basking in the beauty of the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas. His love for the sea was matched only by his entrepreneurial spirit. As a successful businessman, Guil was known for his sharp mind and generous mentorship, always ready to share his wisdom, business acumen, support and encouragement with others.
Guil was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie Merle Ray and James Guilford Ray, Sr. and his beloved grandson Benedict Guilford “Ford” Ray, whose memory he held dear.
He is survived by his loving children, Kelley Heath (Rob) and Brent Ray (Christine), his cherished grandchildren, Jack Heath, Alexander Ray and Thomas Heath; his sisters, Peggy Sichveland and Lesa Truax.
The family expresses deep gratitude to Guil’s longtime caregivers and to everyone at the Anne & Donald McGraw Center for Caring, Community Hospice. The care Guil received by the McGraw Center nurses, staff and administration were both loving and professional. Their compassion and expertise provided unmatched comfort to both Guil and his family.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Guil’s memory may be made to The McGraw Hospice Center, 4715 Worrall Way, Jacksonville, FL 32224 or to The Ford Ray Memorial Fund at The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, 3421 Belmont Boulevard, Nashville, TN 37215.
