

PORTER- John Steele Porter, Jr., 75, passed away August 29, 2010. A Jacksonville native, he was a longtime resident of Neptune Beach. He retired from Milton J. Wood Company, where he was an engineer. He spent many years working as a plant engineer in making paper. He was a 1956 graduate of Duke University, where he earned a BSME degree. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and Phi Mu Epsilon. John was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida and was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. John served in the U.S. Navy. He and his wife have been longtime members of First Christian Church of the Beaches (Disciples of Christ).
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lydia; two sons, John Steele Porter, III (Kathy) and R. Jefferson Porter (Deborah) of Seattle; and seven grandchildren, Jessica, Sam, Devin, Lena, Khuntia, Riley and Ben.
Visitation will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2010, at First Christian Church of the Beaches.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Adult Day Services, Almost Home/ Beaches Assisted Living, or First Christian Church of the Beaches.
