While she will truly be missed, it brings us great peace to announce the passing of Shirley Smith, who is now reunited with many, many loved ones in heaven. She was a loving mother, grandmother & great-grandmother who passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 2nd, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida. Shirley was born on September 11, 1945, in Lumberton, North Carolina to Annie Mae & Clayton Brock. She was a beacon of life filled with love and laughter who loved her family and her church. Shirley leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished forever by all of those who knew her.
Shirley worked for over 30 years with the Richmond County School District in Hamlet, NC but her true passions lied with her husband and children. Shirley enjoyed putting together various cross-stitch pieces and was also an avid reader. She had numerous books throughout her apartment that she had read (some several times). She LOVED Tom Cruise and “Jack Reacher” and would anxiously wait for the next season to come on TV so she could watch it. She also loved her daytime ‘Soap Operas’, many of which she would say she watched but mainly slept through.
She was a devoted wife of 40 years to Bobby W. Smith Sr. who passed before her in Aug, 2008. She leaves behind many wonderful memories with her family; her son, Bobby Smith Jr. and his family (wife Elizabeth, daughter Bobbi and son Dustin and grandchild/great-grandchild Rachel and her daughter; Charlotte and grandchild Avery from his previous marriage to Angela Simpson) and her daughter, Christie Smith and family (daughter Krysta Lainhart and her husband Shane and their three children, Athena, Kassius & Ares – daughter Alejandra Perez and her husband, Jordan – son CJ Cobble & son Rey Loera).
Shirley is survived by her sister Gaynelle Moon and preceded in death by her brother’s Thomas Ray Brock and Buddy Newton.
Shirley’s legacy of love and dedication to her family and community will forever be remembered by all who knew her. She leaves behind a family who loved her and friends who cherished her deeply. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all of those whose lives she touched.
A celebration of her life will be held on May 22, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at Beaches Chapel by Hardage-Giddens, 1701 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to her church home of Kernan Baptist Church (www.kernanchurch.com).
Mom, you made us laugh for many years and we will miss you greatly. May Shirley’s memory bring comfort to all of those she loved and inspired.
