Christine Elizabeth Grimes Coates was born June 08, 1926 in Coats, North Carolina to Delma Thomas Grimes and Minnie Parrish Grimes. She passed away on January 31, 2018 at the McGraw Hospice Center following a bout of flu and its subsequent affect. Christine is survived by her spouse of 70 years, Joseph S. Coates, and five Children, Joseph Michael Coates (Debbie), Beverly Coates Newton (Jack), Stanley Grimes Coates (Cindye), Lynette Coates Billington and Henry Millard (Chip) Coates. She was one of nine children and is preceded in death by all of them. Her siblings were Joe Grimes (Belle), Roy Grimes (Lema), Paul Grimes (Mac), Margie Grimes Wescott (Richard), James Grimes (Lib), Jessie Grimes (Ruth), Clarence Grimes, Dorothy Grimes Westbrook and countless nieces and nephews. Christine has nine grandchildren, Ashley Coates, Bethany Coates Wilson (Evan), Jacqueline Christine (Christi) Newton Butts (Nicholas), Jack Andrew (Andy) Newton, Kyle Joseph Coates (Danielle), Tyler Benjamin Coates, Duane Billington, Dustin Coates and Bradley Coates (Ryan). She has nine great-grandchildren, Austin Coates, Hunter Claypool, Ivy Claypool, Tanner Wilson, Emma Wilson, Kane Butts, Tylyn Billington, Luke Coates and Liam Coates. Christine is survived by three loving sisters-in-law, Lib Grimes, Ruth Grimes and Annette Coates and is preceded in death by her loving brother-in-law, Donald Coates.
Christine was a Registered Nurse and graduated from Highsmith Hospital Nursing Program in 1946. She started her nursing career at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina and continued working until her retirement as a public health nurse for the Duval County Health Department in 1991 with 23 years of service.
Christine was a woman of many talents. She was an avid seamstress and made many of the clothes her children wore during their childhoods. She continued her love of sewing once her children were grown and made many beautiful quilts. She loved working in her flower garden and enjoyed the birds that visited her bird feeders each and every day, especially her hummingbirds. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and almost always had cookies or cakes or banana breads to share with her loved ones. Christine loved music and was a member of the Trailblazers Choir at Arlington Baptist Church.
Christine was a big supporter of her children and grandchildren, going to many dance recitals, piano recitals, Boy Scout and Girl Scout activities, baseball games and gymnastic meets.
Christine was a member of the Joy Class at Arlington Baptist Church and will be missed by all.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, February 06, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road. Jacksonville, FL 32218.
