

Born on November 21, 1947, in Jacksonville, Don’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith in God, profound love for his family, and impactful career in the Jacksonville’s plumbing community. Known for his warm heart and quirky old-timer sayings, Don never met a stranger and left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Don was a retired instructor at Florida State College of Jacksonville and later worked for NEFBA and the City of Jacksonville. He dedicated over 30 years to teaching plumbing, helping hundreds of individuals learn the trade and provide for their families. His commitment to his craft and his students reflected his generous spirit and desire to uplift others. Don proudly served as a jet engine mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971.
Raised in simpler times, Don’s love for fishing was a constant throughout his life. He found immense joy fishing from his jon boat or on the banks with his grandchildren. Don was known for letting everyone else catch the fish, though he occasionally caught a few himself. When he wasn’t fishing, he was often found fixing something around the house or working on a car, showcasing his incredible ability to repair just about anything.
Don was a devoted family man and a pillar of strength for his loved ones. He was a loving husband to his beloved wife of 31 years, Ellen Yawn Douglas. He was a cherished father to Jeff (Angie) Douglas and Karen (Mitch) Foss, his two surviving children with his first wife, Susan Jones. Don was also a devoted stepfather to Pamela (Ronnie) Gordon, Robbie (Christy) Boatwright, Kimberly Boatwright, and Karen Boatwright. His grandchildren, Devon, Jacob, and Sarah, along with his step-grandchildren Blake, Cameron, Zachary, Zoe, and Ayson, brought immeasurable joy to his life. Don’s love for children and his nurturing nature created a legacy of love that will endure through generations.
Don’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a devout Christian who lived his life according to his beliefs, always showing kindness, compassion, and generosity. His faith guided him in all his endeavors and provided him with strength and comfort throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott “Scotty” Douglas, his parents Quitman and Thelma Douglas, one brother, four sisters, and step-son, George Boatwright, Jr.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Saturday, October 12, 2024, starting at 10:00 a.m. with a service in celebration of life at 12:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, officiated by Charles Pless. Following the service, Don will be laid to rest by his immediate family at Douglass Family Cemetery in Lake Butler, FL.
Don’s life was a testament to the values of family, love, faith, and connection. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him and had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to be part of his life. May he rest in eternal peace.
