Dorothy L. McCorn was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was the oldest daughter of six children born to the late William (known as Sunny) and Henrietta (Truesdell) McCorn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burnice Williams, and siblings, Jane E. McCorn, Betty Ann McCorn Coles, Bernice McCorn Hackney, Frances T. Odum, William Charles McCorn, Joseph R. McCorn and Roosevelt Killion, nephew, William “Billy” McCorn.
Dorothy was raised by her paternal aunts (Irene and Mable) in Jacksonville, Florida where she graduated from Matthew W. Gilbert High School in the Class of 1955. In attempting to contribute to the well-being and stability of her family, Dorothy expressed her desire to work in the medical field as a Nurse Assistant. She retired after 25 years from St. Vincent’s Riverside Hospital then became an Independent Home-Health Caregiver. She worked tirelessly making everyone feel special and cared for over 40 years.
Dorothy’s faith in God and the example set by her family anchored her life. She was baptized at Greater Macedonia Missionary Church and, years later became a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. As her health declined, her service waned but her faith remained strong.
Dorothy was a lover of family and all things beautiful and bright. She greeted everyone with a smile and filled the room with kindness and laughter. Whether you were her loving son, grandchildren, her beloved nieces, nephews, or adopted family, she was affectionately known as “Aunt Dorothy/ Aunt Dot” where she would greet all with a broad smile and a hug. Each one of the nieces and nephews thought they were the
favorite, but we all knew that Bernard won. Seeing her in her last years holding Bernard’s hand with a good ole “McCorn grip” of endearment was truly a treasure.
The memory of her love and legacy lives in the hearts of her devoted son, Bernard, daughter-in-law Annette, brother, David (Juanita) McCorn, Sr. of Tulsa, OK, grandchildren: Stacy Williamson, Brandy (Josh) Brubaker, Bronson (Rebecca) Rivera, nieces: Vivian Thomas, Palatka, Fl, Jannelle C. Correa, Sharon L. McCorn of Worcester, MA, Myra (Marion) Hart of Tallahassee, FL, April Williams of Jacksonville, FL, nephews: Adrain Mahan of Hull, MA, David (Rebecca) McCorn, Jr., of Kansas, Missouri, Sheldon T. McCorn, Providence, RI, Rev. Dr. Lester A. (Charlene) McCorn of Rock Hill, SC.; and a host of great-grandchildren, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and adopted family friends.
