Edward was born in Fargo, ND and raised in Moorhead, MN. He joined the United States Air Force and while serving in Los Angeles, CA, Edward met and married Elizabeth Ann Hayden. His eight years in USAF Intelligence led to a 30 year career as a cryptanalyst at the National Security Agency. Eventually based in Fort Meade, MD, Edward and his young family lived in Karamürsel, Turkey; San Angelo and San Antonio, TX; Moorhead, MN; Laurel, MD; Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England; Glen Burnie, Pasadena and Millersville, MD. Retiring early from the Department of Defense in 1994, Edward and Elizabeth moved to Atlantic Beach, FL and then to Jacksonville.
Edward was a member of The Phoenix Society of Baltimore for many years where he enjoyed staying in contact with many of his fellow cryptanalysts. He was an avid puzzle solver, often completing daily crosswords in ink! He enjoyed learning how things are made and how they work. Early in his retirement, Edward researched his family tree, making renewed connections with family in Norway. He also worked with his brother David and former coworkers helping others trace their family trees.
The eldest child in his family, Edward was preceded in death by his father Newell Kermit Eide and his mother, Arna Magdalene Eide (née Leiseth); his sisters Barbara Ann Reppen, Moorhead, MN; and Jonelle Marie Kummer, Walcott, ND; his niece Dr. Marilou Sollom (née Pechacek), Bemidji, MN; his nephew John Thomas Kummer, Lake Park, MN; and his niece Nichole Johnson, Dilworth, MN.
Edward is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Ann Eide (née Hayden); his daughters Faith Elizabeth McCoy (William Page McCoy), Jacksonville, FL; Brenda Nicolene Mathis (Robert Frank Mathis), Oriskany, NY; and Janis Patrice Pascoe (Geoffrey Albert Pascoe), Windham, NH; and a son, John Edward Eide (Donovan W. Hannis), Waianae, HI; a sister Judith Elaine Pechacek Johnson (Lance E. Johnson), Moorhead, MN; a brother, David Michael Eide (Carrie Eide), Portland, OR; and a sister Deborah Magdalene Hall (William Wayne Hall), Austin, TX; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Edward has five grandchildren, David Thomas Snowberger (Amy Chamberlain), Poulsbo, WA; Andrew Philip Pascoe (Laura Lindauer), San Francisco, CA; Diana Patrice Yaeger (née Pascoe), (Aaron Yaeger), Lynchburg, VA; Nicholas Jordan Eide (Waianae, HI); Juliana Mae McCoy (née Chamberlain), Morgantown, PA. He also has five great grandchildren in Lynchburg, VA, Simon Peter Yaeger; Adeline Grace Yaeger; Lydia Ruth Yaeger; Luke Ethan Yaeger; and Monica Hope Yaeger.
Edward often joked about being a homing pigeon and home truly was his favorite place of all. Most of all he loved being with his family, always giving of his kindness, ready with a smile and sometimes even a pretty good dad joke.
The family would like to thank the caring and attentive doctors, nurses and staff at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Jacksonville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the charity of your choice.
