

Born and raised in Salisbury, Maryland, H.B. attended the Virginia Military Institute before graduating from Rollins College and the IMD business school in Lausanne, Switzerland. After graduation, H.B. served in the United States Army for two years, primarily in Japan, before returning to Ocala, Florida where he and his brother Fred ran a successful, family owned, mining company.
In 1971 he met Ann Saunders of Jacksonville and they married the following year. The two retired to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1987.
H.B. was active in his community and supported numerous organizations. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Albemarle Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, the Monticello Cabinet, the Colonial Williamsburg Associates, the Lawn Society of the University of Virginia, and Farmington Country Club. He was a supporter of the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia where he endowed a chair in his wife's (Ann) name, and he was a past member of the board of the Ashlawn Opera.
He had a special love for travel and in his retirement years he and Ann had the opportunity to visit many countries.
H.B. is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann, daughter Holland Gibbs (Charles), three grandchildren (Margaret, Trip and Henry), a brother Fred Roberts (Carolyn) of Ocala, Florida, and nephews Fred Roberts, Jr. and John Roberts, both of Ocala.

A private funeral to celebrate H.B.’s life will be held in the Memory Garden at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 4129 Oxford Avenue Jacksonville, FL 32210 or Asbury United Methodist Church 1401 Camden Avenue Salisbury, MD 21801.
