Mr. Herbert Elonzer House Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the home of his son Rodney and daughter-in-law Stacy House in Augusta, Georgia.
Herbert is survived by his sons Darryl House Sr. of Maryland and Rodney House of Augusta, GA and his younger sister Daisy Faison of Atlanta, GA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Delores House and three sons: Herbert E. House Jr., Alden House, and Roderick House. His legacy continues through 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who cherished him dearly.
Born on March 3, 1934, in Summerton, South Carolina to the late Elise and Tresvelt House, Herbert completed his education in South Carolina before serving honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his marriage to Delores, the couple established their home in Baltimore, Maryland, where Herbert began his career with the United States Postal Service. He dedicated 41 years to federal service before retiring.
In 1994, Herbert and Delores relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where his passion for helping others led him to a second career at Home Depot. For over a decade, he took great satisfaction in assisting customers with home improvement solutions, particularly in plumbing and electrical work. Following Delores's passing in 2016, Herbert remained in Jacksonville until health challenges prompted his move to Augusta in 2022, where he lived with Rodney and Stacy, receiving exceptional care until his final days.
Throughout his life, Herbert was admired for his unwavering work ethic, commitment to excellence, and masterful carpentry skills. His legendary frugality was a point of personal pride—he often joked that he could "squeeze the copper and zinc out of a penny." With his trademark humor, he insisted that "it's all in the mind," claiming to turn "39 going on 38" at every birthday. Herbert's dignity, resilience, and proud spirit touched everyone who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to his primary caregiver, Stacy House, whose dedicated and compassionate care for Herbert over the past three years has been truly extraordinary. The family wishes to honor her unwavering commitment to his well-being and comfort.
