Jean Ann Luke, 87, of Jacksonville FL, died peacefully December 26, 2024 at Baptist Medical Center Beaches after a long struggle with cancer. Jean was born June 22, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa to Mary and Dewey Driskill.
She graduated from North High School in 1956. She attended Ottumwa Community College for one year. Next, she entered the Sisters of Humility Catholic convent to become a nun. She remained for six years, receiving an education to become an elementary school teacher, but decided to leave and choose a different path. She went to St. Paul, MN and taught in the Catholic school system for two years. She met Anthony J. Luke and they were married on June 8,1968 in St. Paul and moved to Bremerton, WA. They raised two sons, Michael and Brian. She obtained a special education degree in teaching from Central Washington University. She loved teaching and taught children in both special education and elementary levels. Wherever she lived she was very active in her Catholic churches and was involved in guilds, liturgy committees, Sunday schools, Eucharistic adoration coordination and St. Vincent de Paul charities. When she retired from teaching she spent time in Minnesota with relatives, in Mesa, AZ as a snowbird, and finally settled in Edmonds, WA. The last year of her life she and her husband moved to Jacksonville, FL to live with her son, Michael.
She is preceded in death by her parents Mary Walsh and Dewey Driskill, and her two brothers William and Lee Driskill. During the final days of her life Jean was convinced that in addition to good medical care the power of prayer helped keep her alive as relatives, friends and even strangers were praying for her during seven years of battling cancer.
A Funeral Mass for Jean will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
