
Rodney H. Smith, 90, passed away on December 21st after a lengthy illness. Rodney was born to Edgar and Sarah Smith on March 28, 1926. Rodney loved being outdoors, whether working in the yard, boating, fishing or camping. Rodney also loved working with wood and made it his profession, working as a draftsman, millworks (creating trim, windows and doors) and general maintenance. He also flew a spotter plain for the Civil Air Patrol during World War II, patrolling our coastal waters on the watch for enemy submarines. Rodney also built several boats and too many pieces of furniture to count. Rodney loved spending time with his family and working with his church.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy T. Smith; his parents, Edgar and Sarah Smith; sister, Lou S. Payne; brother-in-law’s, Dan Johnson, Joe McGill, Lonnie Tate and Robert Tate. Rodney will be missed by his only child, Nancy Hanzelon (John Singer); granddaughter Elizabeth Gartman (Ryan Mitchell); great granddaughter Brandy Page Mitchell; sister, Sandra McGill; sister-in-law’s Margaret Johnson and Jackie Tate as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held for Rodney on Friday, December 30 at Town & Country Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 am, with services beginning at 11 am and interment at Riverside Memorial Park to follow. HARDAGE-GIDDENS TOWN & COUNTRY FUNERAL HOME, 7242 Normandy Boulevard is serving the family.
