Drusilla “Dru” Newell, age75, of Fenton, formerly of Waterford, passed away Monday, November 9, 2020. Dru was born on October 21, 1945 in Detroit, daughter of the late Peter and Virginia Slepak. She married Ken Newell on November 17, 1967, and enjoyed 50 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2018. She is survived by her children Kimberley (Eric) Bruce and Christopher Newell; grandchildren Peyton Elizabeth Newell, Dominick Joseph Bruce, Emily Sophia Bruce, Jonathan Douglas Bruce; sisters Sue Amatangelo & Beverly Runyon, brother Gerald Slepak; nephew & godson Nicholas Amatangelo and other nieces & nephews.
Dru, who was very proud of her polish heritage, graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Hamtramck and attended Wayne State University. She had worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber and then joined the Bozell Advertising Agency where she had worked on the Jeep and Chrysler accounts. She retired from the Latcha & Associates Advertising Agency, where she worked with Ford and Mazda. Dru was an active volunteer in the community, who was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America Clinton River Council, and served in numerous roles including a Cub Scout Den Leader, working concessions at the Silverdome, and many, many other activities. She was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award by the Clinton River Council to recognize her years of community service and the impact she had on scouts. Dru also worked with the Girl Scouts of America. She was active with the Lake Oakland Heights Neighborhood Association and a fan of U of M and Detroit sports teams. An avid bowler, Dru bowled on many leagues in the metro Detroit area, eventually meeting her future husband Ken while bowling. More than anything, she loved being with her family and was very supportive of all of her kids activities, never missing a game or dance recital. She put herself last and others first all of her life right up to the end. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at St. Kenneth Catholic Church, 14951 North Haggerty Road, Plymouth, MI. Fr. Tom Belczak, officiating. Interment will be private at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Dru will lie in state at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of the Mass. The family will also receive friends Tuesday, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Family Funeral Care, 2904 Orchard Lake Road, Keego Harbor. A Rosary Service and time of family sharing will be Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
