

Thomas Blume was born in Lancaster, Ohio on August 14, 1944, the son of Frederick and Virginia (Pless) Blume. He died peacefully at home on April 20, 2025, following a courageous struggle with prostate cancer. Tom earned a PhD in marital and family therapy from Texas Tech University and was a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and National Certified Counselor. He was Associate Professor Emeritus at Oakland University, founding Director of the Institute for Identity Renegotiation, and former Director of the Addiction Studies Institute at Mercy College of Detroit. Tom was a Vietnam veteran and an activist in Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He performed in choral ensembles throughout his life, including at the White House and Kennedy Center as part of the Bicentennial celebrations. Tom was an avid cyclist and road racing fan. A lifelong dog-owner, he enjoyed long walks through the neighborhood. He is survived by his sons Sean and Nathan, sisters Marcia and Peggy, and his loving wife of 47 years, Libby (Balter), whom he met when they were both preschool teachers. He was preceded in death by his brother James, his parents, and his son Wesley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the League of Michigan Bicyclists.
Memorial Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2025 from 11:00am until the time of the Celebration of Life at 12:00pm at Family Funeral Care, 2904 Orchard Lake Road, Keego Harbor.
