Doris passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, after sustaining injuries from a fall in her home. Doris was born in Liberty Hill, TX on May 26, 1934, along with her twin brother Bobby Hibler, to Richard P. Hibler and Kathleen Hibler. She and her siblings Helen, Richard, Robert Dale, Frank and Raymond grew up in the Bertram, Burnet, and Liberty Hill area of Central Texas. Doris married William J. (WJ) Smith in 1952 and resided in Briggs, TX until WJ’s passing in December 1962. They had two children, Eva Kathleen (Kathy) and William Jefferson (Jeff). Doris married Gene Deskins in March 1964 and made Killeen, TX their home. Gene introduced two children from a previous marriage, Steve (Speedo) Deskins and Debbie Deskins. Doris worked at the Killeen Police Department, the City of Killeen, and retired from Killeen Independent School District in 1993. She and Gene owned and operated a small restaurant in the Killeen Mall called Der Dog Haus and a self-service laundromat prior to their retirement.
Doris was honored with many friends and was blessed with several honorary nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. They nicknamed her “Doie”.
Her stepson Steve (Speedo) blessed her with two grandchildren, Damian and Ana, who currently reside in Vermont and Florida respectively. They both added great grandchildren to the family mix and Doris was delighted, loving them all dearly.
Doris was honored with extended family and many friends throughout Texas, Vermont, Kentucky, Ohio, Montana, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Florida. She was the strength of her family and would help when ever she could to those in need. She loved hummingbirds and growing flowers of all types. Blue Bonnets were one of her favorites. She had many dogs and cats throughout her life that were like family members too. She indulged Gene and her son Jeff with their hobby of Cowboy Action Shooting. She was known by the name “Blanco Alice” chosen to honor her grandmother Alice, and enjoyed meeting and befriending a whole new circle of people within the sport. She often came out to lend a hand or encouragement.
