Elmond was born November 6, 1930 in Round Top, Texas, the son of Henry and Stella (Wunderlich) Neumann.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served from 1949-1970. He was stationed in Japan in 1949 after basic training; in South Korea in 1950 after the Korean war broke out; in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina in 1951; and in Germany, where he retired from the military in 1970. His MOS was Mess Sergeant and his rank was Sergeant First Class. Elmond was awarded an Occupation Medal (Japan); Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars; and a United Nations Service Medal. After he retired from the military, he worked in Civil Service in Germany for 25 years.
He met the love of his life, the late Esther Elfriede Humm, while stationed in Germany. They were married on January 21, 1956, in Germany and lived there many years before retiring to Killeen, Texas in 1996.
They enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends in Germany each year, and those who lived in and near La Grange, Texas. One of their favorite past-times was going to Las Vegas, Nevada. Elmond was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for others. He liked to work in his yard and took pride in it. He also enjoyed watching game shows like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! . He and Esther were very fond of their special pets, Niki, and Chico.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther; three sisters: Junell Blankenburg, Virginia Kruse, and Corrine Ruether Lehmann; a brother, Henry Neumann, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Neumann; six brothers-in-law: Gilbert Simmons, Arno Ruether, Johnny Kruse, Quintus Lehmann, Lawrence Blankenburg, and Georg Humm.
Survivors include: a step-son, Bernd Humm and wife, Margarete, of Germany; a step-grandson, René Humm, of Germany; a sister, Margie Simmons, of Burrillville, Rhode Island; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Porfirio and Lisa Vidal and their children, Izzy, Isaiah, and Isaac, of Killeen, Texas.
The family wishes to thank everyone at Legacy Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care Center and Encompass Health Hospice in Austin, Texas who provided Elmond with compassionate and quality end of life care.
