23, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on June 27, 1951, in Queen Anne, Maryland, Sylvia was one of twelve children of the late James Roy Egerson, Sr. and Mary L. Egerson. After graduating from Easton High School in 1969, part of the Talbot County Public School system, she soon answered the call to serve her country by joining the United States Army.
Sylvia’s military career spanned over two decades, from December 12, 1969 to January 31, 1993. After training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, she served with distinction, at various military installations, including Washington, D.C., Germany, Korea, and Fort Hood, Texas. She earned numerous awards for her dedication and service, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class.
She demonstrated her commitment to lifelong learning by earning an Associate’s Degree from Central Texas College in 1992. Sylvia later graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Central Texas in 1997.
After retiring from the Army, Sylvia discovered a new calling in education. She spent over 20 years inspiring and empowering students in the Killeen Independent School District. At Audie Murphy and Smith Middle Schools, her classroom became a place where her passion for helping children succeed touched all who crossed her path and left a lasting impact.
Sylvia was an active member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation and the Corporal Herman Hughes American Legion Post 87, continuing her commitment to service beyond the Army and the classroom.
Sylvia was known for her vibrant spirit and generous heart. She loved spending time with family and friends, shopping, traveling, reading, dining out, and enjoying casino entertainment. Her cherished collections of angels, bells, and clocks symbolized her appreciation for beauty (angels), spiritual grace (bells), and time (clocks), uniting her passions, personality, and the way she shared her life with others.
Family remained central throughout her life. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William “Pete” Thomas, Charles E. Thomas, and James R. Egerson, Jr.; and three sisters, Georgia Hamilton, Gloria A. Egerson, and Betty Jean Egerson. She is lovingly remembered by her brothers, John F. Egerson (Sharon), Ernest N. Egerson, and Albert E. Egerson; sisters, Joan Egerson, Mary V. Egerson, Sarah L. Wright (James), and Margaret P. Williams (Marcus); sisters-in-law, Shirley Thomas, Sylvia S. Egerson, and Sonya McGee; goddaughter, Dominique Morris; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and a dear friend and colleague, Sandra Forsythe.
Sylvia’s legacy of service, love, and compassion remains a lasting thread, weaving together the shared experiences and memories of all whose lives she touched, inspiring them onward.
A visitation for Sylvia will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 South Fort Hood Road, Killeen, TX, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
