Dr. Bonnie Lee Longnion, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on February 25, 2026 at the age of 77. Born on August 13, 1948 in Port Arthur, Texas, Bonnie lived a life defined by her dedication to learning, her compassion and care for others, and her service to the community.
Bonnie pursued her passion for education with remarkable determination, earning her doctorate from Texas A&M University and going on to become a professor, academic administrator, researcher, author, school board member, and lifelong community leader. Over the course of her distinguished career, she had an unwavering commitment to democratizing education and improving workforce readiness for K-12 and college students - notably serving 25 years as both a Lone Star College System administrator and Humble ISD School Board Member. Colleagues remembered her for her sharp intellect, generous spirit, and relentless commitment to serving her community. Those fortunate to work alongside her were invariably shaped by her example.
Beyond her professional life, Bonnie (Bon-Bon) was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She demonstrated an infectious joie de vivre. Bonnie could (and would) dance to any genre at any time. She loved to travel, music - especially live music, musicals, great food, lazy days at the beach, cheering all Texas sports teams, and reading up to five books a week. Most importantly, she loved doing all of those things with family and friends.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents Melba Ruth Barras and Bart Vernon Ownby Jr. as well as her twin brother Bart Vernon Ownby III of Port Arthur, Texas. She is survived by her sister Bridgett Bourne of Nome, Texas, her daughter Jennifer Layne Longnion of Redondo Beach, California, her son Jeffrey Kyle Longnion of Boise, Idaho and their incredible families - including all of the Longnion grandchildren - Kyan (20), Rayn (13), Reed (8) and Sylvie (4).
A celebration of her life will be held March 14, 2026 at 11:30 am at Kingwood Funeral Home, Kingwood, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Dr. Bonnie Longnion Literacy Fund at Dr. Bonnie Longnion Literacy Fund (https://humbleisdfoundation.org/how-you-can-help/tributes-memorials/dr-bonnie-longnion-literacy-fund.html).
Dr. Bonnie Lee Longnion leaves behind a legacy not measured in titles or accolades, but in the lives she touched and the hearts she opened. She will be deeply missed.
