Born in Houston, Tx,, 1940, to Robert Emory and Marguerite Sanders, Mrs. Devore grew up in the Denver Harbor section of north Houston; and, later, Pasadena, TX, before attending Pasadena High School where she earned her diploma in 1958. Upon graduation, Mary set off for Sam Houston St. University. There, as she would often quip, she earned her ‘MRS’ degree in 1960 when she married Roger Devore. The two would be inseparable for the following fifty-six years; until God called her loving husband home.
A devoted wife and mother, Mary followed her military husband to many parts of the country and world; beginning in San Diego, California, then to Key West, Florida; Naples, Italy, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, and Hawaii; ultimately settling in East Texas near Tyler upon Roger’s retirement from the service. Along the way, Mary bore two sons; Warren and Paul, and spent any free time she had volunteering as a Cub Scouts den mother, PTA officer, team mom for her sons’ various sports teams; as well as volunteering at various churches; youth Sunday school leader, VBS leader, and organist for weekly services. Professionally, Mary worked as office manager and human resources director for such organizations as Curtis Mathes Television and Furon (a Flour company) in Athens, TX.
Known for her witty sarcasm and tender heart, Mary enjoyed gardening, cross stitch, and playing games such as Forty Two (dominos). But, mostly Mary enjoyed the company of her husband; as the two would sit together at the kitchen table, listen to the radio, and talk to one another well into the night.
Mrs. Devore is preceded in death by her father, Robert E. Sanders, her mother, Marguerite Henderson; and her husband Roger Devore. She is survived by her brother Bob Sanders and his wife Linda; son Warren Clinton Devore and his wife Shelia, and their children, Wyatt and Ashley; and son Paul Kevin Devore and his wife Modesta, and their son James.
