Melvyn S. Reading of Trailwood Village, Kingwood passed away November 3, 2023. He was born in Woking, Surrey, England on November 18, 1945, and grew up in London. Melvyn graduated from Sir Walter Saint John’s Grammar School and received his MSc from Sir John Cass College, London. London was always dear to his heart.
Melvyn was passionate about chemical and physical sciences. He worked in corrosion research with British Steel Corporation Research and later had a career in technical sales and management, initially with Petrolite Instruments, with whom he and his family moved to the US, and finally with Rohrback Cosasco until his retirement. In the course of his career, Melvyn traveled worldwide.
Melvyn was an avid reader, whether it was a recent detective or spy novel, epic fantasy, or non-fiction book on ancient cultures. He was fascinated by ancient cultures and Meso-America and loved visiting ruins and artifacts. Rock collecting was a lifelong hobby, and he collected beautiful specimens from all over the world. He was also a talented woodworker and furniture maker. Melvyn loved bridge and was able to spend many hours in retirement playing in several groups.
Family was very important to Melvyn and he treasured the time when the entire family could be together. He often lamented the impact of smartphones and digital technology on society, and always favored a book and personal contact.
He is survived by his wife Catherine Reading, his children Jennifer Alex Meyer (Marc Meyer) and Nicola Reading Mans (Andrew Mans), his grandchildren Barret Mans and Matilda Mans and his sister Marilyn.
A Celebration of Life for Melvyn will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Highway 59 N, Kingwood, Texas 77339.
