Our Dad, Opa, and Uncle passed away at Freeport (now WRHN at Chicopee) in Kitchener, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at the age of 98.
Beloved husband of the late Cornelia (née Van Slooten) Egerhazi (2021).
Dear father of Kati (Laci, predeceased), Alex (Eunice), and Tony (Tracy).
Loved grandfather of Dori, Evan (Amanda), Justin, Spencer, Sam, and Dawson.
Dear brother-in-law of Julianna, and dear uncle of Gyula, Klara, Judit, Ferko, Ibolya, Lazi, Klara, Judit, Zoli, Roland, and Jay.
Predeceased by his parents Laszlo and Klara, sister Klara (Gyula), brothers Lazi and Feri(Julianna), and sister-in-law Tineke (Jack). Predeceased by first his wife Zsuzsanna.
Alex was born in Hajdúhadház, Hungary, in 1928 where he grew up and helped on his family’s farm. He studied there and in nearby Debrecen before being accepted to college for horticulture. After the war the communists took over, and he was removed from college because of the political upheaval. Alex had a brief marriage, and they had a beautiful daughter, Kati. He worked several jobs with his last one being in Budapest as a draftsman, before deciding to leave Hungary during the revolution in 1956. He escaped to Austria and within a year chose Montreal, Quebec to be his new home. He knew a few others who lived there, as it also had a good-sized Hungarian community.
Alex had several jobs while learning English and his longest position was at United Aircraft as a quality control inspector. Around 1962 he met a beautiful lady known to her friends as Corrie who had recently arrived from the Netherlands. They got engaged and married in 1964. Soon after they had 2 awesome sons. From the home in Boucherville, Quebec he took his family on a rip to Holland & Hungary, to the U.S., Niagara Falls, and also to a cabin in the woods in the Laurentians, that he had built.
In 1970 Alex and his family moved to Kitchener, Ontario where they settled. He worked in the metal division at Electrohome, for 18 of the next 20 years. His role was in quality control making sure the parts were built to spec.
He loved his family, church, gardening, travelling, camping, playing cards, and visiting with many of his friends. There were also regular trips going to the edge of the city nurturing more vegetables at a garden plot (you can see no one went hungry) – this land ended up as the Williamsburg cemetery where his ashes will rest. After retiring he spent his time gardening for the church, volunteering at the Hungarian Club and joining a local chapter of the Kiwanis club.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations would be appreciated to Calvin Prestyberian Church, Waterloo Region Health Network and Canadian Bible Society.

Visitation will take place at Calvin Presbyterian Church (248 Westmount Rd. E., Kitchener), on Friday, September 11, from 6 - 8 p.m., and on Sunday September 13, from 3 - 4:30 p.m.
A celebration of life will take place on Sunday September 13 from 5 - 6 p.m., with reception to follow.
