Born in Orillia, Iain eventually settled in Waterloo. His life was about helping people. He graduated with a degree in social work and spent his work life assisting others. He was a hard working man, taking to heart the needs of the people he assisted, and doing all that he could to make the world a better place.
Iain was known for his love of Harleys and playing billiards. Traveling the roads on his Harley, enjoying the cool breeze and taking photos of landscapes brought him great joy. If it was followed by a round of billiards then the great day became exceptional. He was a family man who held his children and grandchildren dear to his heart. He spent many hours with his grandchildren, regaling them with stories of the MacNeill family history; discussing science, nature and current events and imparting wisdom through his gentle guidance.
Iain loved music. He was a naturally talented musician and could be counted on to have his guitar ready at all times. The family has many fond memories of impromptu sing-a-longs. His musical taste was eclectic and he loved everything from classical to rock and roll and even the oldies that his own parents enjoyed. He had a particular fondness for jazz and was a regular attendee at jazz music festivals.
He loved all things Scottish, and was a keen family historian. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all of his life experiences, and as a natural handyman he could fix or build anything. Iain loved a bargain, and all the better if the bargain was old and vintage. He loved going into antique shops just to look around, but invariably he always left with a new treasure.
Iain is survived by his four children: Mary (Bryan), Morgan (Jen), Daniel (Becky) and Erin and his grandchildren: Nolan, Lilly, Abaigael, Eimile, Emersyn and Isla. He is also survived by his siblings: Barra, Murray and Glen. He was predeceased by his mother June, father Daniel and his brother Donald.
Iain’s passing comes as a great shock and is gravely felt by his entire family. He is deeply missed. His legacy of love, laughter, and integrity will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him. All held him in the highest regard and loved him dearly.
Dad, we miss you so much. Our hearts are broken into a thousand pieces. Words cannot express the incredible life you led, and the enduring impact you have made on our family. You were our calm in the storm, and our comfort when we needed clarity. You provided clear direction, stability and gave sound advice based on the wisdom learned from your own life. You always gave all of yourself and never stopped fighting for what is right, and reminded us of our own strength. Because of you we are strong, with hearts of lions, strength of family, and a passion for life. Dad, we thank you for your love, support, wise words, stories of our ancestors, and for helping to shape our lives. You will live in our hearts and minds forever, as you live among the angels.
