

Passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital on Friday, June 17, 2016, at the age of 95 years. Born in Surabaya, on the island of Java, the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) on December 20, 1920. During WWII he joined the resistance and was court marshalled by Japan as an enemy of the state. He survived the Japanese prison camp and then the civil uprising. He married Emmy Olva Krul, moving with their 2 children to Nederland in 1950, then to Canada in 1957. Jan is predeceased by his wife Olva and sister Helen. He leaves behind son Jan (Evelyn) and daughter Louise Bell (Allan). Beloved Opa to Kirk and Ayesha, and Janet (Karl), Heather (Sandy), and Kerry Ann (Jay). Great grandchildren: Taylor, Parker and Riley; Dennis and Emmy; Seth and Brody, and Liam. Also leaves brother Jacques (Elizabeth and niece Anita) and special friend, Marie Solomon. Jan was a faithful member of Countryside Reformed Church in Cambridge. He will be missed by all. Jan’s family will receive relatives and friends at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, (519-743-8900), on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Thursday, June 23, 2016, from 12:30 – 1:15 pm, where the funeral service will be held in the chapel at 1:30 pm. Cremation will follow. Interment at a later date in Memory Gardens Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations would be appreciated to a charity of your choice.
