It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Moutieh “Jiddo” Nicolas Kandalaft. He passed peacefully with family by his side on Friday, May 8, 2026, in his 94th year.
Jiddo was born in Syria where he met the great love of his life, Yvonne Haddad. They shared 53 happy years together before her passing in December 2005. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, dancing and adventure while raising their three daughters, Hanan Saliba (John), Ghada Kandalaft, and Rana Moufti (John). He was educated in Syria and England and enjoyed a long career in Syria and Kuwait as an engineer before settling in Canada in 1988 and pivoting to real estate.
Jiddo is survived by his brother (Maurice) and predeceased by his wife (Yvonne), brothers (Nadeem & Lutfi), sister (Nadeema), and grandchild (Hani). He will be deeply missed by eight grandchildren (Teema, Jad, James, Lara, Amer, Faris, Sami and Danny), four great-grandchildren (Noah, Rachel, Ryan, and Leewa), and countless others whose lives he touched.
Jiddo will be remembered for his infectious smile, exceptional sense of humour, lifelong passion for learning, unrivalled knowledge of history, religion and politics, and his love of cooking, classical music and ballroom dancing.
A visitation will be held from 6PM - 9PM at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre on Tuesday, May 12th. A memorial service celebrating Jiddo's exceptional life will be held on Wednesday, May 13th from 11AM - 12PM, preceded by a visitation at 10AM.
