Born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire to Annie and Herman Howe, Olga immigrated to Canada with her family in1948. Her first job was at Mutual Life where she met and fell in love with Rex William Dark (d. 2005) and in 1949, they began a marriage that lasted over 50 years. Rex and Olga shared a love of gardening and crafting, and in retirement, they turned these interests into small businesses.
Olga is predeceased by her parents, brother, Cy, and sister, Peggy.
Olga was also a working mom: early highlights being working in the office at Hiway Market and becoming the Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunnyside Home. Later she worked at the Waterloo County Area Planning Board where the first Regional Chair, Jack Young, saw just the EA that he wanted, and in 1972, she was the Region’s first employee. She worked for Young and his successor, Jim Grey, until she retired.
For a while, she had a trailer in Southampton and loved shopping on the town’s main street, making new friends, tending her garden, and sharing ice cream and sunsets with her grandson.
Olga spent her final years at Trinity Village Care Home. There she received wonderful care from admin, medical and support staff who remember her for her wicked sense of humour and her sharp mind. She enjoyed the different programs where she said she “always learned something.”
Olga will be deeply missed by her daughter Heather (Iain Wright) and grandson Sandy. She will be remembered fondly by nieces and nephews both here and in England.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on February 7th, 2026, at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, located at 1001 Ottawa St., S., Kitchener, from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Trinity Village Care Home.
