Spencer, Alice J. Bowers, age 91, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Alice was born in Knoxville, TN on September 16, 1919 to the late Ella Daugherty Bowers and James Bowers. Alice, a retired LPN, was awarded Tennessee’s “Psychiatric Nurse of the Year” during her 20 year tenure at Eastern State Hospital. She was a 50 year member of the Laurel Chapter of Eastern Star. Preceding her in death were her former husband, William H. Spencer, Sr.; brothers, Jack and Carl Bowers; sister, Minnie Irene Bowers Mills (Danny), ex son-in-law, Charles Hood, Jr.
Survivors include; son, William H. Spencer, Jr. (Josie); daughters, Elizabeth (Betty) Hood Cooper (Gary), Rosemarie Lowe Weber (Thomas); nephew, Jack W. Bowers (Sandy); grandsons, Michael Hood, Greg Lowe (Marjie), Brian Lowe and William Spencer, III (Liz); great grandsons, Samuel and Benjamin Spencer.
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm Thursday with the Eastern Star service at 7 pm followed by the funeral in the Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Bob Dustman officiating.
