California passed from this life onNovember 20, 2018. Burial
will occur at 12:00 noon in Knoxville National Cemetery
where she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband,
Capt. Robert Warren Anderson. Family and friends will
gather to honor and celebrate her life at 1:00 p.m. Friday,
November 30, 2018 in Berry Lynnhurst Chapel with
Reverend Jodi McCloud officiating.
Evelyn was born on December 19, 1920 in Tazewell, Tennessee
to Bailey Gilbert Manning and Maggie Florence Rose.
As a young girl she enjoyed spending time with her sisters
and friends swimming in “The Sinks” in the Smoky Mountains
National Park. She graduated from Alcoa High School and
worked in the Alcoa Aluminum Plant during World War II
as her contribution to the war effort. She began
a restaurant with her mother and sisters in 1953 called
“The Pioneer House” in Alcoa. With her sisters, Bonnie and Rose,
the Pioneer House became the place to be with many celebrities
enjoying the family style meals for which the restaurant
was known. Evelyn loved to attend antique auctions to purchase
important pieces for the front rooms of the restaurant
which was a log cabin built in the early 1900s. Evelyn married
the love of her life on October 24, 1947 in Marietta, Georgia,
Lt. Robert Warren Anderson, while he was in the
Army Air Corps. She remembered listening to his plane fly into the
McGee Tyson Airport in Alcoa where he often appeared
to see the young beautiful redhead in the family café called
the Air Castle. Although she had many boyfriends, her pilot
was her true love. He became the father of her
twins and ended with a family of four children. Evelyn loved
to travel and with her husband and daughters and saw the
world on five continents. Her favorite photo is that of her on
the Great Wall of China. She was a true adventurer who
would board a plane without reservations at her destination
so that she could stay and wander where ever she decided
on the moment. She was not one to worry. She was always
positive and loved to talk with people from all walks of life.
Evelyn decided one day to “go ask for a job” to help
put her daughters through college. With no experience,
education, or knowledge about the field, she walked into
the Cecil WoodsReal Estate Agency and walked out with
a job. She was a very independent and thoughtful
decision maker whether working with her family
on the restaurant, contracting to build her own homes,
or buying rental property for the future. She
owned her decisions on a daily basis and loved to
give advice to her children even as they were grown adults.
Her best advice was to always think that you can do anything.
She dearly loved her grandchildren who were her joy especially
toward the end of her life. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Robert Anderson, her sister, Bonnie Shields,
brother in laws Perry Shields and Alex Ridings, and parents,
Bailey Manning and Maggie Rose.
She is survived by her daughters Linda Anderson of
Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, Kevin Dishman and husband
John of Dallas, Laura Street and husband Joe of
Amarillo, Texas, and Julie Siddons and husband
Rick of Atlanta. She is also survived by her grandchildren
Dr. Ryan Street and wife Janna of Amarillo, Shelley Coar
and husband Bill of Denver, Tylin Senvardarli of Los Angeles,
Maggie Holst and husband Henry of Alexandria, Virginia
and great grandchildren Cale and Elianna Street and Ashton Coar.
The family wishes to express their eternal gratitude
to her caregivers both in Manhattan Beach, California and
Amarillo, Texas as well as BSA Hospice of the Southwest in
Amarillo for her loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family
would like memorials to be sent to Evelyn’s
blessed missionary, Christa Hammaker, at
WorldVenture, 20 Inverness Place, Englewood, CO 80112.
