

John Carter was born in Sutton, Vermont and graduated from Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax, Vermont in 1943. Following that he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1948. During that period, he was a Cadet Midshipman in the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps based in Kings Point, Long Island. He spent nearly two years on the 5000 man troopship SS Brazil while working in the engine room and nearly circling the globe.
After graduation from the University of Vermont he was an engineer for Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 20 years and taught in the Bradley University engineering department for the same period. Following that he was employed for several tractor seat manufacturers as Vice Presidents of Sales and Engineering, which was his favorite occupation. At retirement age he became a Manufactures Representative for several tractor seat companies and continued that profession, including the design of suspension seating until his death. He was awarded 24 such U.S. Patents during his lifetime. John was also very active in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) throughout most of his career. His hobbies included his work, reading, antique cars and traveling.
He was the son of Robert and Helen Carter and has a sister Catherine and brother Bob (deceased). He was married to Margaret Larrabee and had three sons, David in CT, Paul in IL and Brian (deceased). Later he married Ruth Schultz and they have resided in Fairfield Glade, TN, since 2002. As he wished, there will not be a funeral nor visitation, as he requested cremation.
