David proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Lieutenant during the Vietnam War. Later in life, he became a deeply respected figure in the cycling community. As a longtime member of the Roadhogs Racing Team, Louisville Wheelmen, and later the Ridenfaden Cycling crew, David was a dedicated leader and coach.
From a 400 mile ride in under 24 hours earlier in life to a 90 mile adventure through the Alleghany mountains with his kids and grandkids to celebrate his 80th birthday, cycling was a central part of his life. He also found joy in reading, writing and enjoying the wonders of nature through hiking, camping and backpacking with his family.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Spitler.
David is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Spitler; his children, Daniel Spitler (Rachel), Matthew Spitler (Nikki), and Rachel Weinrich (Gavin); his brother, Sam Spitler; and his many grandchildren who made him so proud: Rhea Weinrich, Pace Harman, Thomas Weinrich, Bowie Spitler, Zane Spitler, Rowan Spitler, Skye Weinrich, Lincoln Groft, Evelyn Weinrich, Huck Harman Spitler, and Lynnon Spitler.
David will be remembered for his leadership, his passion for cycling, and his dedication to his family and community.
There will be a Celebration of Life for David at Stegner Pavilion in Cherokee Park, near Hogan’s Fountain on May 19th. Visitation will begin at 4:00, with a Memorial Service to follow at 6:00. For those that feel inclined, please bring your bike. David’s children and grandchildren will lead a casual ride around the park following the service.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to honor his memory, please consider donating to World Bicycle Relief or The Center for Biological Diversity in his honor.
