

Barbara Standard Nugent, 79, of Austin, Texas, passed away on March 9, 2024, one day shy of her 80th birthday. She was born on March 10, 1944 in Valdosta, Georgia and was a beloved teacher and librarian for nearly 30 years, first at Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport; then in East Texas; and finally in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana schools for 25 years.
Barbara is survived by her husband of nearly 55 years, Donald R. Nugent of Austin, Texas; identical twin sons, Mark Nugent of Austin, Texas and Matthew Nugent of Chattanooga, Tennessee; daughter Amanda Barnett of San Antonio, Texas; daughter-in-law Natalie Nugent of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren William Reeder, Ethan Nugent, Emma Nugent, and Erin Nugent. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, William C. Standard, Jr. and Mildred Pipkin "Mickey" Standard of Shreveport, Louisiana, and brother, William C. Standard III of West Monroe, Louisiana.
Barbara was a 1962 graduate of Fair Park High School in Shreveport, Louisiana and graduated in 1967 from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She was an avid reader her entire life and imparted her love of books and reading to countless students over the years. She was a true cat lover and could often be found curled up with a good book and a dozing cat. She also loved to travel, especially after her retirement from teaching in 2004. She especially enjoyed her trips to England and Scotland, Alaska, and Hawaii. After residing in Natchitoches for more than 30 years, she and Don relocated in 2010 to Austin to be closer to family and she enjoyed the Texas Hill Country and central Texas for the remainder of her life.
The family will receive visitors from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Weed-Corley-Fish in Lakeway, Texas. A graveside service is planned for Monday, March 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park in Austin.
