Dr. Mario Marcelo Labardini, age 84, of Austin, Texas passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2021. Mario was born January 16, 1937 in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico. It is here where he started his journey into a remarkable life. Introduced into the world of medicine at a young age with his father and grandfather both having notable careers in medicine. He attended medical school at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) where he graduated with honors. Shortly after he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he began as a research assistant at the University of Michigan before being accepted as a resident intern. He completed his residency under Dr. Reed Nesbit, Urology Department. During this time he also accepted a fellowship at Harvard's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.
It is in Ann Arbor where he met his loving wife, Barbara. He returned to Mexico City to join in practice with his father. He worked as an Attending Urologist at the Trauma Hospital of the National Medical Center. He then became Chief of Pediatric Urology at Instituto Mexicano de Pediatria (IMAN) and then Chief of Urology at LaSalle University. He accepted a position as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at Wilson N. Jones Memorial Hospital in Sherman, Texas in 1977 and returned to the United States. He opened a private practice caring for patients in the surrounding community. He became Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where he participated in the Urology Department's grand rounds each week. He retired in 2012. He did not remain retired for long as he took several locum tenens positions in South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Alaska before truly retiring in 2014.
Mario was an advocate of children's health and this was exemplified in his continued work in pediatric medicine. He was an adventurer by heart. He spent as many opportunities as possible traveling and experiencing other cultures. He was best known for his gastronomic centered travels and the stories surrounding those adventures. He had an uncanny sense of humor that brought joy to those that knew him.
He is preceded in death by Barbara Labardini (wife), Ricardo Labardini M.D. (Father), Margarita Labardini (mother), Jorge Labardini (brother). He is survived by a daughter Caterina Jakubowski (Chris), a son Marcelo Labardini (Nur), sister Isabel de Fernex (Alberto), grandchildren Luca and Lara Labardini, very dear friend Ghislaine De Regge, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be on November 12, 2021 at 11:00 AM CT at Emmaus Catholic Church in Lakeway, TX.
