Sue Mitchell Conner died peacefully at Lakeway, Texas, on June 22, 2016, at the age of 92. Sue was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on January 6, 1924. She was adopted at six weeks old by her mother, Ethel Mitchell, and spent her early years in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University, and at that time met a handsome Army Air Corp pilot trainee, Samuel Walter Conner, Jr. They married on August 8, 1944, in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. After the war, Sam started his lifelong career in the insurance business, which necessitated moving often, and they spent time in Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Dallas and Midland (twice), and made many lifelong friends in each of their stops.
Sue and Sam's first child, Coila, was born on August 3, 1945, and their second child, Kathy, was born on December 17, 1950. Sue and Sam always considered Midland as their home, and Sue was actively involved in the community and in her church, serving for many years in several capacities but her favorite was her time in the nursery. Sue was a woman of strong faith, and she was always a prayer warrior. Her grandchildren remember Sue (Googie) as a very active grandmother, playing tennis, hosting her friends at bridge and spending lots of time in the kitchen preparing multicourse meals, desserts and bread. Her gift of hospitality was legendary and an invitation to a meal at the Conner house was highly sought after by family and friends. Sue's friends were so important to her and she cherished them.
Sue was predeceased in death by her husband and her mother. She is survived by her daughters, Coila Conner Morrow of Cedar Park, and Kathleen Conner Childress, her son-in- law, David Childress of Houston, her grandchildren, Shelley Morrow Evans, and husband, Bill Evans, Conner Morrow, and wife, Adrianne Morrow, Will, Laura and Kathleen Childress, and her great-grandchildren, Samantha Aucoin, Morgan Childress, Patrick Morrow and Dillon Morrow.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff, caregivers and hospice at Brookdale Lakeway who so unselfishly and professionally cared for Sue and made her last days as peaceful as possible, and to her fellow residents whose many friendships were a comfort to her.
A memorial service to celebrate Sue's life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, Midland.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that remembrances be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 800 West Texas Avenue, Midland, Texas 79701, or to the charity of one's choice.
