Susan Marie Freeman Mullens was born in Danville Illinois on October 6, 1948 to Roland and Marguerite Freeman. Soon after, the Freeman family moved to Austin, Texas where she grew up, graduating from Lanier High School in 1966. Susan married the love of her life, Patrick O. Mullens on August 15, 1970. After graduating from the University of Texas, Susan and Patrick moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma where Patrick had accepted a position with Phillips Petroleum Company as a structural design engineer. In 1977 Patrick’s career took the young Mullens family overseas to Stavanger, Norway and later to Oslo, Norway. In 1982 the family returned to the United States, and over the following years, Susan and Patrick lived in Bartlesville, Austin, Houston, and Calgary, Canada. In 2005, they retired to Lakeway, Texas.
Susan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, as well as a volunteer in numerous civic and church organizations, and avid gardener – hers were always some of the finest and best-tended gardens, (occasionally, award-winning). Over the years, Susan volunteered her time to help others through several wonderful organizations and groups including The Assistance League (Houston and Austin), CASA of Fort Bend County, The Medical Center of Houston, The Women’s Club (Houston and Austin), Lakeway Expatriates Club, The American Cancer Society, Thrift Shop (Houston and Lakeway), The Lakeway Newcomers Club, Lakeway Friends of the Park, and The Lakeway Garden Club.
Susan and Patrick have been active members of The Lakeway Church for the past 15 years. Susan always enjoyed the community she found at the church, making new, lifelong friends and hearing the inspirational sermons and music.
On July 22, 2022, subsequent to a lengthy illness, Susan left this life to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in His Kingdom. Susan will continue to be loved by her family and her many friends and will live on in their hearts and minds.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents Roland and Marguerite, and by her brother Lamont Freeman. She is survived by Patrick, her beloved husband of 52 years; their son Billy; their son Michael, his wife Marissa, and their three children - Sean, Connor, and Molly; her brother Roger Freeman, his wife Betty, and their daughters Melissa and Melinda; her sister Rolanda Cain and her children Leonard and Heather; her sister-in-law Patricia and her brother Lamont’s daughters Christine, Cathy, and Candy; and Carol Freeman.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at The Lakeway Church on August 6, 2022 at 11:00 am, to be followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the Mullens family asks that memorial donations be made in Susan’s name to The Lakeway Church.
