Rene "Uncle" Hernandez, 71, joined his parents Juan and Cristina Carstens Hernandez, his son Rene Jr. and his nephew Francisco in Heaven on May 30, 2019. Rene was born July 14, 1947 in Santiago, Chile, the middle child of five brothers. Rene immigrated to the United States in 1978, became a citizen in 1996, and worked for the County of Los Angeles for 40 years.
Rene had a penchant for putting a smile on the face of every person he talked to, his humor knew no end, and he had a genuine appreciation for the small things in life. Rene always went out of his way to make sure you knew he appreciated and loved you. Rene could be relied on for any favor small or large, from babysitting, picking up his nieces, nephews, and grandkids from school, dog sitting, or being a shoulder to lean on. Rene loved family gatherings and was always the life of the party.
He is survived by his wife, Viviana "Loree", his sons, Leonardo, Enrique (Sylvia), Pablo, Esteban, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, his brothers, Juan (Dolores), Pedro, Enrique (Ann), Carlos (Maria) and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the staff at Antelope Valley Hospital and the National Prion Disease Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
The family graciously ask that donations be made to National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center or UCSF Health Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in Rene's name.
