Barbara Schmidt-Watts was born on March 22, 1933, in North Hollywood, California, to Helen and Lyman Hahn. Her parents faithfully brought her to Sunday School, planting early seeds of the faith that would define her life. At age 13, after the family moved to La Crescenta, California, Barbara attended a revival where she asked Christ into her heart and was filled with the Holy Spirit that same night—an experience she cherished throughout her life.
Barbara went to Glendale High School in California and later Southern California College. During her college years, she met her first husband, David Schmidt. The two were married in La Crescenta and spent their first year together doing evangelistic ministry. They went on to pastor in Fallbrook, California, and then in Cypress, California, before moving to Grand Junction, Colorado, where they served as assistant pastors. Due to David’s illness, the family relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. David passed away in September 1971.
In Las Vegas, Barbara began working for the Clark County School District, where she served faithfully for 24 years before retiring. She and David were blessed with three sons—Dave, Steve, and Tim—each of whom brought into her life the daughters she always wanted: Kathy, Cheryl, and Lenore. Along with grandchildren: Nicole, Daniel(Amber); Ivy (Blake), Josh (Rachel), Austin; Matthew (Alex), Audrey Schmidt, Desiree (Dusty) along with 8 great-grandchildren.
In 1977, Barbara married Rex Watts, who came into the marriage with three daughters—Ann, Jeannie, and Linda.
Barbara’s life was filled with love, service, and joy. She enjoyed traveling, crafting, spending time with her grandchildren, visiting church members, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday School. She was a devoted prayer warrior, lifting up her children, grandchildren, family, and friends daily. Her deep love for the Lord was evident in her constant devotionals and her heartfelt desire that everyone she knew would come to a personal relationship with Christ.
Barbara also had a playful side and loved all kinds of card games, board games, and especially playing bridge with her bridge club.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the team at Atria Seville Assisted Living for their exceptional care and the friendships Barbara formed during her time there. They also deeply appreciate the residents who were part of her community. A special thanks goes to Cheryl, Tim’s wife, for her loving care—visiting Barbara playing bingo games with her two or three times each week, especially over this past year.
When we think of our mom, we can almost hear the Lord say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Her legacy of faith, love, and prayer lives on in all who knew her. We love you Mom!
