Beatrice K. Mookini was born to Samuel Kumeheulu and Rose Hussey Kauiokohala Mookini in Lahainaluna, Hawaii on June 16, 1916. Beatrice was usually called “Bea” and in later years was often affectionately called “Auntie Bea.” She grew up on Maui and attended grade school at Olowalu, where her father and mother both taught. She and her siblings attended a private Hawaiian school, Kamehameha, grades 9 through 12, in Honolulu on Oahu. In 1929, two ministers of the Gospel, Dave and Emily Christie, came into the community where Bea’s parents resided. The Mookini’s were impressed with these two servants of God who were following the teachings of Jesus and spending their lives preaching the Gospel freely, just as Jesus and the early apostles had done. While Bea and her sisters were away at Kamehameha for school, her father and mother and sister, Helen, made their choice to serve God. A few months later, Bea and her sisters had a break from school. It wasn’t long before Bea and her siblings, Dorothy, Tamar, and Walter made their choices, too.
Bea was 11 years old when she expressed her desire to follow in this way and to simply obey the teachings of Jesus. After graduating from Kamehameha, Bea spent 15 years there as the Assistant to the President, where she ran the girl’s section of the school. In 1950, at age 33, Bea chose to leave behind her occupation and her own ambitions to follow the footsteps of Jesus in the ministry, freely giving her life for the Gospel’s sake. Bea began in this great work in San Diego, CA with Minnie Christie and Gladys Kaatz. Bea labored in California, Arizona, Hawaii, and Washington. Over the years, she enjoyed special privileges of attending conventions in Canada, New Zealand and the Orient. Her latter years were mostly spent in California, and in January, 2010, she moved to Las Vegas. She resided with Donna and Mae Reed where she was lovingly cared for until she passed away on Friday night, September 19th at age 98. Bea was predeceased by her parents, Samuel K. and Rose Hussey Mookini; Sisters, Helen Mookini, Dorothy Clemente, Pauline Molale, and Tamar Tavares; and her only brother, Walter Mookini. She will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews, laborers in the ministry and her many friends through Gospel bonds.
