Mrs. Bernice Williams Hughes

Mother Bernice Hughes was born on October 25, 1927 in Lexington, Mississippi to the late Reverend Winfred & Jesse Williams. She was one of nine children. The family relocated to Gary, Indiana in the early 40s. Bernice started her walk with the Lord at an early age being baptized at Williams Chapel Church of God in Christ pastored by her father.

Bernice married Walter B. Hughes and to this union was born three sons and five daughters. She loved taking care of her family, shopping, crocheting and she especially loved to laugh. You could never be around Mother Hughes for long without being made cheerful by her unusual wit. She was a very warm loving person full of joy and hospitality and will be sadly missed by those who have been blessed to know her.

Most of All, Bernice loved God and raised her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. She served faithfully at Williams Chapel in many capacities i.e. Sunday School, Choir & Devotional leader. Later she served at Love Feast Church of God in Christ as Church Mother under the pastorate of Rev. Clarence Harris. Mother Hughes relocated to Lansing, Michigan in July of 2004 and served faithfully as a Church Mother under the pastorate of Bishop Phillip E. Owens until God called her home October 3, 2010.

Bernice is preceded in death by her Mother and Father, two sons: Marvin and Ernest; two brothers: Rev. Sam Williams and Roy Williams; and two sisters: Seleaner Sanders and Lemmie Yancey.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: one son, Dennis Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada and five daughters, Brenda (Gregory) Powell of Scottsdale, Arizona, Patricia (Phillip) Owens of Las Vegas, Nevada, Valeria (Darius) Brown of Blaine, Minnesota; Doreese Hughes of Gary, Indiana of Macon, Georgia; three brothers: Rev. Lincoln Williams, Winfred Williams and Robert Williams; one sister: Viola McElroy: sixteen grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her Immanuel's Temple Systems of Church family in Las Vegas, Nevada and Lansing, Michigan.
