Carl Eugene Brettschneider - FORMER ALL-PRO DETROIT LION Former Detroit Lion linebacker Carl Brettschneider passed away on November 26, 2014 at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, NV. He was 82 years old. Carl was born in Dundee, Ill on December 2, 1931. He was a veteran of the US Army Brettschneider attended Dundee High School in Dundee Ill. where he was a standout athlete and went on to play football at Iowa State University. He was inducted into the Iowa State University Hall of Fame in 2012 as well as the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. He went on to a successful professional football career, first playing for the Chicago Cardinals from 1956-1959 and then for the Detroit Lions from 1960-1963. He was All-Pro in 1962 as left linebacker. Known as the 'creeper' for scaring and taunting teammates at night during training camp and road trips, it was never confirmed Brettschneider was the creeper but the creeper was in Chicago while he was with the Cardinals and appeared in Detroit when Brettschneider was traded to the Lions. He appeared in the movie Paper Lion as himself. Brettschneider was known for his keen eye in assessing talent and became Director of Player Personnel in Detroit after an injury ended his playing career. He drafted some of Detroit's best players in the 1968 draft including Mel Farr, Lem Barney and Charlie Sanders. After professional football, Carl Brettschneider had a successful career with Jostens' Recognition Division, becoming the division's first million dollar sales achiever. He was preceded in death by his sisters Loretta Hamilton, Loraine Greuning and brother John Brettschneider. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Louise (nee) Harris and son Brad (Lisa) Brettschneider, granddaughters Blair and Lane, sister Florence Chance and brothers Tom, Robert and Randy Brettschneider.
