Derek was one of my close friends in high school. The kind who fill those years with laughter and loyalty and confirmation that there is space for people who don't quite fit in naturally. He made it easy for me to move about socially and figure out how New York City worked. He was instrumental in my decision to step off the subway at the 59th St platform for a few minutes each day before school to hang out with  seemingly every high school aged student in Manhattan. Derek was in most of my classes over our four years at Regis, bright, funny, and always having a great time. I will miss him.
