Eda Mary Schivo- Herman went on to join her beloved family in heaven July 19th 2020. Eda was born in Venice, Italy on May 17, 1922 and migrated to the United States with her parents Pete and Emma in 1923. They settled in Butte, Montana with her father working in the mines and Emma raising her and her brother Frank, working various jobs, and saving for their future. Her parents opened a boarding house for the miners that both she and her brother helped out with as young children and then Eda’s mother opened a small restaurant in Butte called Emma’s Place that became a favorite of the local community. Emma served authentic Italian homemade delicacies and old fashioned American dishes. Businessman Milton Prell and family were regulars of this trendy place to eat and drink. His friendship with the Schivo’s led to Eda and Frank relocating to Las Vegas and helping Prell with the Club Bingo and subsequently the development and opening of the Hotel Sahara.
Cousin Geno Munari, described Eda saying “Eda was a beautiful young woman, in today’s standards would be classified as a “Looker”. She caused many heads to turn, as was the case of co-worker Gordon Scott, who was a life guard at the Sahara Hotel pool, who went on to star as the new Tarzan of Hollywood fame.
Eda was Milton Prell’s personal secretary for 10 years until she married Aaron Herman, a partner of Prell’s in the Mint Hotel. Eda raised two children Andrea and Jeffrey. Eda suffered the loss of her son Jeffrey in 1968, which was a tragic twist that no mother, father or family can recover. Subsequently Eda went to work for Alex Shoofy at the International Hotel as the supervisor for the cashiers cage and was there for over 10 yrs. From there she went on to work in the same capacity at the Aladdin Hotel before retiring in 1982
Eda would always have friends and family stopping by to visit and she would always offer a guest something to eat and drink. The guest expected a few pieces of cheese and salami, but when the food was ready, it was the most delicious buffet and bar in Las Vegas. You name the dish, and it was on the table. Family and friends would never forget those unbelievable meals which seemed to be whisked up in five minutes. If one asked for a recipe, Eda would always have a copy and remark, “This is the same recipe we used in Butte, Montana it’s so simple.”
Her husband Aaron was a boss at the Dunes Hotel and frequently after a daily shift he would invite his key floormen and dealers to his house. The tables, and counters were filled with food and drink. Eda was so happy to feed the crew and then listen to them all re-hash the day in the Dunes pit. Eda would always have a chance to “rib” a few of the guys including her husband with her keen sense of humor. Eda had a knack of delivering double entendre humor that would produce a sparkle in her eye. Never down and always looking at the “glass half-full”
Eda was a wonderful loving person that kept an uplifting outlook throughout her lifetime. When she tagged you as a friend, it was forever. She will be missed by many.
Eda is survived by her daughter Andrea Lopez, niece Janeen Reiser (Fred), nephews Gary Schivo and Michael Schivo.
