Eleanor J. Maxwell

ELEANOR JAMES MAXWELL It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor James Maxwell, 99, of Las Vegas, June 28, 2011, due to complications from a stroke. Eleanor was born Oct. 11, 1911, to George and Besse James, in Neosho, Mo. Eleanor spent her early years in southern Florida, where her father worked as a civil engineer building the Tamiami Trail and lived in the Florida Everglades with her pioneering mother and sister, Shirley. Eleanor was then raised with family upon her return to Neosho, she spent her high school years in Dennison, Texas, and as a young adult, lived in Los Angeles, prior to arriving in Las Vegas in 1946. Eleanor raised her family in Las Vegas, and enjoyed a long career with the Clark County School District. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, George Maxwell; and her son, William "Bill" E. Maxwell. Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Linda DiGiovanni (Stephen); her grandsons, George, Paul, Tanner and Drake Maxwell; as well as many loving friends and extended family members. Eleanor was an independent woman who exhibited an eternal optimism. She always looked at the brighter side of things and always could find a way to share smiles and laughter. Asked for secrets to her longevity, we deduce that the desire to enjoy life to the fullest regardless of situation, never smoking, never drinking and never refusing dessert after dinner, were key ingredients. Eleanor will always be cherished for her enduring spirit and her love of life. "Rest in peace, Eleanor and know that you are truly and deeply loved. We will miss you in our lives." There will be a celebration of Eleanor's life at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at First Christian Church, 101 S. Rancho Road, where Eleanor was a long-time member.
