FLORENE was born on March 24, 1944, to the late Florence Ruth Grant and the late William Halsey. FLORENE was raised in Harlem New York. She was brought up to be self-confident and dependable. These were traits that would serve her well throughout her life.
FLO was the oldest of two siblings. She had a younger brother and sister the late Herbert Morris Davis Jr. and JoAnn Timberlake. FLO and her siblings may have had the typical rivalries while growing up, but she was always consistently loyal to her family. She was an activist and a protector of her family. When she was a young child, FLO took part in playing stick ball which is a form of baseball. In her spare time, she liked to read and watch movies. FLO’s memorable achievements included her being an A student but the biggest highlight of her life was simply playing and spending time with her family and many friends.
FLO attended JHS Ps. 164 and graduated from George Washington Senior Academy in 1961. 1963 she met and married Arthur Malone Lee. From this union FLO was blessed with her oldest Stephan Arthur Lee. Years later she was blessed with her baby girl Eva Delores Lee. Stephan and Eva made her a grandmother, and she was blessed once again with three grandchildren, Johnathan Lee, Austin Lee, and Cleopatra Lee, and one Great Granddaughter Jayda Lee.
Always considered to be a solid friend, FLO was fortunate to have several acquaintances and close friends during her life. She was committed to her friends and valued the trust she placed in them. One of her longest friendships was with Delia Thomas of New York City whom she met on April 1, 1980. Ms. Carlton and Ms. Swann were also two friends she met in New York City while working at FJC. FLO was a walking schedule; she wrote down everything. She didn’t like to be late. She would always be ready hours beforehand. Her daughter drove her crazy because she always waited to the last possible minute to get ready.
FLO was excellent at meeting deadlines. She was an efficient worker, one who paid careful attention to detail, allowing sufficient time to complete one task before moving on to the next. Her primary occupation was a Clerk and Security Guard. She was employed at Housing Preservation and Development in New York City and FJC which is a shelter also in New York City. She volunteered at H.P. Fitzgerald Elementary school during her retirement. FLO worked hard to be a collaborator, doing what was necessary to get the job done.
Flo loved sports; her favorite was baseball you would often hear her yelling into her phone “What is the score for the Yankees game today?”
Her favorite pursuits were playing bingo with her friends, watching sports, (mainly baseball The New York Yankees) listening to music, and enjoying time with her family. FLO was content with enjoying her hobbies alone but was also willing to share her interests with others.
FLO was a member of several community groups, including serving on committees for the St. John the Baptist Senior Fore Runners, and Young at Heart Senior Group at Remnant. Politically, FLO was Democrat.
FLO was a woman who was dedicated and devoted to her faith. She was a member of Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas. During that time, she was a member of the senior group Young at Heart.
FLO enjoyed traveling and taking vacations. Her favorite vacations were anything that involved her family, some of those vacations included Tucson Arizona, to see a play and explore the restaurants. She also visited Mount Charleston and Mesquite in Nevada. During July 4th FLO would often visit Primm Nevada with her daughter and granddaughter to see the Fireworks.
FLO was not an animal lover but did fall in love with the pets her children forced on her. The first was the late Butterscotch whom she affectionately called Butter and Ricky who is a fierce protector.
When FLO’s retirement finally arrived in 2006, she was ready to move her life to be with her daughter to help her raise her granddaughter. In retirement, she found new pleasure in playing Bingo, attending live concerts, painting, and volunteering at H. P. Fitzgerald Elementary School. FLO most of all was committed to those she knew and loved.
