Dr. Tompkins, PsyD, was a native of New York City and earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the City University of New York and California Southern University.
When a New York City hiring freeze prevented Dr. Tompkins from becoming a Police Woman, she began her career as an Administrative Aide for New York City’s Bronx District Attorney’s Office and Police Department. After completing her Master’s degree she accepted a position as the Director of the Open Door Drug Program for the Westchester Community Opportunities Program upon completion of New York State’s Certification as a School Psychologist accepted a position as Supervising Psychologist for the Federation of Puerto Rican Organization’s twenty Community Residential and Intermediate Care Facilities for the developmentally disabled throughout New York City’s five boroughs. In addition, Dr. Tompkins was the director of the Great Potential Program, New Rochelle, New York for the State University of New York and an adjunct professor for the Continuing Education Program instructing students in assertiveness at the City College of New York and an adjunct psychology professor at Poughkeepsie New York’s Community College, and the College of Southern Nevada.
Returning to Civil service as a Psychologist for the developmentally disabled, Dr. Tompkins was recruited by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, first, as a Chairperson for the Committee for Special Education, to bring the department into Federal compliance, and as a Regional Coordinator for Release Services for the state’s legislative Comprehensive Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (CASAT). Dr. Tompkins relocated to Nevada when she retired to try her hand at writing.
Dr. Tompkins is survived by her kids Rudolph Avalon Inman, William Henry Inman, and Michael Simmelkjaer Inman, step-son Sean Avalon, her grandchildren Daneisha, Jennifer, Nicole, Danielle, Johnathan, Joshua, Elayna, and Alannis, her great-grandchildren Sandra, Auriana, James, Jailen, Hunter, Imani, Nevah, Eric Jr., and Erica, her great-great-grandchildren Aaliyana, Isabelle, and James Jr., her aunt, Carlyn Jones, her cousins Bob, Lance, Pamela, Terence, Rob, Mark, Christina, Joanna, and Brian, as well as a special mention of Arrick, Tammy, Cathy Buck, other family, and scores of friends and associates.
A memorial service will occur Monday, May 17, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131. A committal service will occur Monday, May 17, 2021 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Palm Northwest Cemetery, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131.
A reception for Gail will be held Monday, May 17, 2021 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131.
