Mr. George Spears Sr., also known as Uncle Buddy and Poke, passed away peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 15, 2019, surrounded by family and friends.
George was born April 24, 1928, to Barney Spears Sr. and Bessie Spears. He was the youngest of eleven siblings. He grew up in a very loving family believing that he had two additional siblings, Dorothy Martin (first cousin); deceased, and Paul Boykin (nephew). George attended A. F. Owens elementary school and Dunbar high school.
George loved his country and became an active duty service member in the United States Army, serving during World War II. After his service in the military, George began working for the United States Postal Service as a Civil Service employee. He would go on to work for 19 years, with Civil Service, from 1950-1969.
George married Dolores Jones, the love of his life, on May 28, 1949. Over the next few years, the couple welcomed four children into their home (Carolyn, George Jr, Yvonne, and Janice). George was a very devoted and loving father. He taught his children core values of life, and love of family. His children remember him as a kind, driven, and passionate father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Everyone who met George, recognized how much he loved his wife, family, and playing keno at the Red Rock Casino. It took very little to make him happy. As long as his wife was by his side, nothing else mattered. Everyone he knew had to hear the story of how he and his wife met and how many years they had been married. He rarely got the number of years correct, but he was always close.
George was a faithful and active member of the Greater St. James Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. He was a generous and dedicated individual who loved the church and was passionate about being involved in the church community. He served as a Trustee for the church for a number of years until he relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2000. After moving to Las Vegas, he attended Mountain Top Faith Ministries Church.
George is survived by his wife, Dolores Spears; children Carolyn Gaiter (Franz), George Spears Jr., and Yvonne Townsend (Wilbert); and his sister Marion Clausell. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and an abundance of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Spears-Turk, five brothers: Flame, Fredrick, Phillip, Claiborne, and Barney Jr., and four sisters: Addie, Marcia, Mary, and Lennie.
He will always be remembered by everyone as a loving, devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Cherished memories of life will forever be shared by his wife, children, and family.
