Sister Gwendolyn Rose Johnson Mabry was born to the proud parents of Mrs. Murdis and Clarence Jack Johnson. She was a very pretty little girl and was known to many as "The Rose". Sister Gwendolyn attended school at Vernon Parish High School and was highly respected by her teachers and peers. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and later received the gift of the Holy Ghost. She became a member of the Johnson Temple Church of God in Christ, Leesville, Louisiana. Sister Gwendolyn always loved going to church and giving God praise.
Sister Gwendolyn moved to the West Coast and met the love of her life. While living in Las Vegas, Nevada she was employed by Nevada Power Company where she remained until she retired. She was their first non-janitorial African American employee.
She later became a member of Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Church and served well. She loved working in the church, but her greatest strength was in the prayer room. She often would disappear into her pray room and stay there for periods of time crying out to The Lord. She really believed that pray would change things.
Sister Gwendolyn married the love of her life Elder Bob Mabry. To this union was born one son and they named him Roderick. The three of them spent many happy times together.
Sister Gwendolyn leaves to cherish her memory: one son Roderick Mabry, Hayward, Wisconsin, two sisters Naomi Lee Smith, San Jose, California and Elizabeth Ann Barry, Stockton, California; three brothers, Superintendent Maurice Johnson (Virginia), New Llano, Louisiana and Clarence J. Johnson, Allen, Texas, Ralph Riggins, Henderson, Nevada and ex-husband Bob Mabry, Spokane, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mother, Murdis Johnson, father, Superintendent Clarence Jack Johnson; one sister, Clara Johnson and three brothers, Lee Arthur Johnson, Samuel D. Johnson, and lee Vester Johnson. She is remembered by a number of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and friends.
