Hector Pilar Gutierrez, Sr. born February 3, 1970 in Hollywood, California, passed away in Las Vegas at the age of 50 on August 2, 2020. Even taking necessary precautions, he contracted COVID-19, and it attacked him quickly, starting with pneumonia (no coughing symptoms). It was an uphill battle from there. Unfortunately, he died of multiple complications of COVID-19 after a 32-day hospitalization, with his wife by his side. He fought a good fight up to the very end.
Hector is survived by his wife, Tisa Gutierrez, sons Isaiah, Ezequiel, Hector, Jr., Gregory Sepulveda, and several pets, including his “doggies”, Nico and Poppy. He is also survived by his sisters, Leticia Flores and Marisela “Suzie” Gutierrez, step-dad, Victor Reyes, several nephews and nieces, and his best friends Eric Gomez, Cesar Castillo and George Markarian.
Hector was born and raised in East Los Angeles, California by his parents Hector C. Gutierrez and Maria Reyes, but also by his grandparents (and next-door neighbors), Ignacio and Soledad Mendez. He was a “mama’s boy” until his mother passed away in 2014. They were very close and shared many laughs, trips, and fun stories together. As an adult, he was also mentored by his step-father, Victor Reyes. Hector was an avid Dodger, Lakers and Los Angeles Rams fan. He proudly graduated from Garfield High School 1988, and immediately joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he fought in Desert Storm, serving from 1988 to 1992. He was a proud Marine.
While in the Marines, Hector learned telecommunications and pursued that passion throughout his career. He excitedly created his own business, Silver State Telecom (SST), while working other jobs to support his family. Most recently, he worked for the Nevada Department of Corrections as a Digital Telecommunications Specialist. He was a hard worker with a strong work ethic, always productive, and willing to take the extra step for his customers and co-workers. His work days began at 4 a.m. to get SST work done, then he would leave for his full-time job in Indian Springs, NV, come home to finish more SST work, tend to his animals, and spend quality time with his family. He loved to “cuddle” his babies. Having children was his dream come true. He was a loving and truly devoted father and husband.
Hector was a great provider. He gave his all so that he could afford the quality time with his family – trips to Cancun, Ensenada, Washington D.C., New York, Utah, Disneyland, and many more. He loved being a “baseball dad” and created many friendships within in the baseball community. He particularly treasured baseball trips with his boys, including Cooperstown (2016) where he, Lil’ Hector, and Ezequiel took a cross country train ride home. He loved such adventures with his family and had many more planned. He will be dearly missed. His friends and family will miss his laugh, his jokes, his welcoming nature, and will miss watching him “chill with a beer in his hand.” Cheers to you Hector!
