Born in Wyoming in 1936, Jack moved with his parents and two older siblings to Central Oregon at the age of four. He was raised in a small farmhouse in Lower Bridge. Jack had a deep love for all creatures, great and small. Whether rescuing a small animal or breeding and training his own horses, he found joy in their company. As a young man, he worked as a ranch hand, mechanic, mill worker, and even owned a bicycle and ski shop in Redmond. Eventually, Jack pursued his passion for public service, becoming a highly credentialed paramedic and firefighter for the Redmond Fire Department. He dedicated over 25 years to his career before retiring in 1998.
Jack is survived by his four children: John Poffenbarger, Susan Gripshover, Dan Poffenbarger, and Katy Maynard. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Colton Scoggin, Ryan Poffenbarger, Jake Poffenbarger, Olivia Gripshover, and Karsten Scoggin, as well as his three remaining siblings: Chuck Poffenbarger, Doug Poffenbarger, and Kay Peterson.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jan Poffenbarger, his sisters Lois and Donna, and his parents, Ervin and Myrtle Poffenbarger.
A celebration of Jack’s life and a burial will be held on his birthday, October 18, 2024. Details about the time and location will be announced.
