A lifelong Las Vegan, Jim grew up in the Mayfair district. He attended Las Vegas High School, a member of the class of 1960, where he was a star athlete, specializing in cross-country running. He continued collecting ribbons and statues in track at NSU (now UNLV), graduating in 1967.
Jim served in the US ARMY from 1968 to 1970. He was stationed in Germany, taking opportunities to explore that country as well as others in Europe. Upon his discharge, Jim went to work for the US Postal Service in Las Vegas. For nearly thirty years he delivered the mail throughout the south east region of the city, retiring from that job in 1997. He would take vacation time every summer, sometimes to paint the family home on 17th street or perform other house repairs, but more than often to take unplanned road trips around the West, and, once back home, showing proudly photos of his adventures.
Jim enjoyed his retirement as a man of leisure and serving as a constant presence for his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. In 1997, he moved into his new home at the base of Sunrise Mountain, providing a home for his mother, a sister, and several nieces.
Jim is preceded in death by his father William Dee Whipple, mother Doris Cameron Whipple, Brother Dennis Whipple, all of Las Vegas, and sister Deloris Stanton, of Rexburg, Idaho. He is survived by his sisters Patricia Coon, and Helen Whipple, both of Las Vegas, and brother, Harold Whipple of Sonora, California.
Jim was notoriously camera –shy and never still for a photo since his high school years.
